Saanich is the largest, most populous municipality in Greater Victoria. It is composed of 25 distinct residential areas. Saanich has a rich history that is reflected in its many heritage buildings, arts and archives. Recreational and economic opportunities are abundant in this municipality.

Location

Saanich is located north of Victoria, BC’s capital city. It has an area of 103.78 square kilometers and is composed of a range of rural and urban landscapes stretching north to the Saanich Peninsula. Elevations range from sea level to 229 meters. It contains 8.2 square kilometers of lakes and 29.61 kilometers of marine shoreline.

Schools

The two school districts that extend into the Municipality of Saanich are School District 61 and School District 63. It is also home to the South Island Distance Education School. Parents and students have many options when it comes to choosing a school, including world-renowned private schools Saint Michael’s University School, Maria Montessori Academy, Saint Margaret’s School and Pacific Christian School. Saanich is home to major post-secondary schools including the University of Victoria and both campuses of Camosun College.

Recreation

Saanich has an extensive cycling network including the Lochside Trail, the Galloping Goose Trail and many kilometers of bike lanes. From golf courses and recreation centres to parks, there is always something to do in this municipality. Economy

Saanich offers a diverse range of economic opportunities from high technology (ViaTech Technology Park) to agriculture to a significant retail sector. Saanich is also home to the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, a major contributor to the world’s knowledge of space and the universe. Much of  Saanich’s economy is small business. Over 70% of businesses in Saanich have fewer than 5 employees. Agritourism and ecotourism are also becoming increasingly important, especially in rural areas. Saanich has a vibrant, skilled workforce that continues to grow.
